"I am able to play"
Matthew lives with quadriplegic cerebral palsy and learning difficulties after mistakes were made when he was born. Our birth injury solicitors are helping with a compensation claim to fund Matthew’s care needs and secure his future.
Matthew’s Story
Medical complications meant that Matthew had to be delivered by emergency C-section when he was born.
Every second counts during a C-section and delays meant that Matthew developed quadriplegic cerebral palsy, hearing loss and learning difficulties.
Matthew and his family asked our medical negligence lawyers to look into the care that Matthew received at the hospital and make a compensation claim to fund his life-long care needs.
We were able to secure an interim payment for Matthew that mean he can get the support he needs while his claim continues.
Securing His Future
Matthew’s interim payment is being carefully managed by our expert Court of Protection solicitors.
With our help, Matthew’s family have been able to buy a home that’s suitable for Matthew’s needs and make sure he’s fully cared for. This has helped Matthew live as independently as possible and get involved with community activities.
The team are now working to secure the family long-term funding so Matthew continues to get the support he needs in the future.
Kimberley Fryer, a specialist in our Court of Protection team, has worked with Matthew and is full of praise. “Matthew is incredible,” she said. “He has faced so many difficulties in his life, yet nothing stops him and his family putting an emphasis on what he can do rather than what he can’t.”
A Life Less Ordinary
With the peace of mind that he’s getting the best possible support from our Court of Protection team, Matthew can focus on what he loves most: music.
Matthew has loved music for as long as he can remember. He’s a part of Rhythm Train, a Stockton-based community drumming team who perform samba beats at events across the North East.
As well as creating his own sounds, Matthew also loves to listen to an eclectic mix of music and has a slot on hospital radio to play his favourite tracks to a wider audience.
“Matthew is a true inspiration,” said Angela Kirtley, a medical negligence solicitor who has worked on Matthew’s case. “Performing with Rhythm Train is just the start for an amazing young man, with his drive and determination, the sky really is his limit”.
Matthew’s other passion is sport. He’s a regular at his local wheelchair football club where he loves meeting new teammates and the thrill that comes from playing inclusive sport.
“No-one should let a condition stop them from doing what they want to do or put plans on hold”, says Matthew. “I certainly don’t let my cerebral palsy stop me from getting on with what I’m doing.”
