It looks like 2024 will offer signs of progress for the UK’s retail, leisure and hospitality sectors – a refreshing change after five challenging years.
Inflation is levelling out, and AI is opening doors for businesses across the sectors. But how many are taking advantage of the opportunities presented by ESG – that’s Environmental, Social, and Governance – to grow their reputation and increase their market share?
In our new Beyond Words report, we've analysed how businesses are prioritising sustainability by examining the last two years of Annual Reports. We look specifically at the consumer sector (retail, hospitality & leisure, and consumer goods businesses) in the FTSE 100 and FTSE 250, reviewing mentions of ESG and other related phrases. This gives a good indication of which organisations are making their people and the planet their business.
Who’s making ESG their business?
Our report reveals a range of interesting findings:
- Consumer sector businesses across both the FTSE 100 and FSTE 250 significantly increased their use of the term ‘ESG’ in their most recent annual reports. Compared to the previous year, the frequency was 18% higher.
- FTSE 250 firms experienced a 12% increase in DE&I mentions, compared to an 8% decrease by FTSE 100 firms.
- In their most recent reports, FTSE 100 businesses increased their use of the term ‘cyber security’ from 265 to 314, representing an 18% increase.
- The number of mentions of 'climate change' significantly increased by 11% across the board.
- Analysis of businesses across the FTSE 100 and FTSE 250 revealed a 29% increase in mentions of 'net zero' and 'decarbonisation' in their recent reports.
