We’re once again an official partner of Superhero Series, powered by Marvel, the UK’s one and only disability sports series for the everyday superhero, as it heads into its fourth year. This one-of-a-kind event normally sees people with all kinds of disabilities taking part in a triathlon at Dorney Lake in Windsor.
Things are a little different this year, though. With coronavirus cancelling events the world over, the 2020 event has transformed into At Home Superheroes. This has seen superheroes from around the nation, and their teams, clock up to 20km in a single month - whether that’s running, walking, wheeling, swimming – or any other method participants choose to hit their goals.
Here are three of our clients who took part in this year’s event, who won’t let their disabilities stop them from achieving incredible things.
Aaron's story
Aaron was only 17 when he was involved in a traffic accident in 2013, leaving him needing lifesaving surgery. He was left paralysed, unable to speak, and needed to stay in hospital for 3 months and more than 2 years in a specialist brain rehabilitation centre. At first, he communicated by blinking, eye pointing, and movement of his left arm.
He was finally allowed to go home in 2015, and thanks to his support team, extensive therapy, and Aaron’s hard work, he’s gone on to make a remarkable recovery. This is highlighted by his involvement in the At Home Superheroes event. Aaron managed to complete the 20km challenge on his Smart Crutches, ergonomically designed to spread weight over the entire forearm, making them far more comfortable than traditional crutches.
Following the event, Aaron said: “The last few years haven’t been easy for me or my family, but I’ve been determined to get my life and independence back. The Superhero series is definitely a step on the road to getting my life where I want it to be.”
He continued, “Sport means a lot to me and it was great to take part in this event. Hopefully next year, we might all be in a position to do the Superhero Tri for real in Windsor.”
Jevonne's story
When she was born, Jevonne weighed just over one kilogram, and was diagnosed with Group B Streptococcal meningitis shortly after she was discharged from hospital. A few weeks before her first birthday, she developed epilepsy, and when she was two, she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy that affects all of her limbs.
Despite a tough start in life, 12 year old Jevonne refuses to let her disability stop her from achieving her dreams. After showing an interest in acting, Jevonne’s mum Sherry helped her apply to an agency advert on Facebook, which resulted in her starring in 2018 BBC drama MotherFatherSon alongside Richard Gere. In addition to her aspirations of being in the spotlight, she’s also been determined to develop her sporting abilities, signing up to take part in this year’s At Home Superheroes.
Jevonne and her mum have completed the challenge together, and Justine Spencer, partner at Irwin Mitchell, has cheered them on throughout the past four weeks. She said: “We can’t wait to see Jevonne’s latest TV appearance when the Superhero series gets aired on Channel 4. We hope that her appearance inspires others and proves that disability shouldn’t be a barrier to achieving your ambitions.”
Mum Sherry, 43, said: “She’s achieved so much and we’re all so proud of her. Jevonne is always looking for something new to do and challenge herself, and At Home Superheroes has been perfect.”

Will's story
Will, 25, had his life changed forever when he sustained a serious brain injury after a car accident when he was just eight years old. He was left unable to walk or talk until his family accessed the relevant specialist rehabilitation, therapies and support he requires to try and live as independently as possible. The Court of Protection team now assist Will in looking after his affairs.
He still has some mobility issues and some memory loss, although he tries both snowboarding and mountain biking with specialist instructors and adapted equipment, and now is a qualified personal trainer.
He signed up to take part in the At Home Superheroes event, when challenged by his lawyer Rachael Adams. Rachael said: “Will works hard to overcome every challenge he faces and At Home Superheroes has been no exception. We’re pleased to have been able to share his achievements , and hope his story inspires others.”
Will smashed the 20km goal, by completing a 2.5km row, a 15km cycle and a 5km run. Will’s mum, Andrea, said “Will is a real fighter, and every day we’re amazed at how determined he is not to let what happened define him. He’s proof of what can be achieved if you refuse to give up.”
