Every year, service men and women sustain heat injuries during training and on active service, both at home and abroad. Heat injury is avoidable with the right planning and preparation, but the MoD doesn't always ensure this. If you or a loved one has developed a heat injury, our expert military solicitors could help you make a compensation claim.

The main types of heat injuries are heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and heat cramps. The effects of heat injury can be very serious and may lead to permanent downgrading or early retirement from the Forces.
Symptoms may include:
- Exhaustion
- Dehydration
- Dizziness and confusion
- Muscle spasms
- Physical collapse.
The most severe cases of heat injury can be fatal. If you’ve lost a loved one to a heat injury, we can represent you at inquiries and make sure you get the answers and compensation you need.
Serving in the Armed Forces can mean exposure to extreme environments. However, the MoD has a duty of care to make sure planning and protocol is in place to avoid preventable injury. The Joint Service Publication 375 (JSP 375) sets out the regulations for training in very hot or cold temperatures, but as cases such as the Brecon Beacons show, these rules aren't always followed.
If you’ve sustained a heat injury while serving in any capacity in the Army, Navy, RAF or Special Forces you may be able to claim compensation. You could also claim if you were injured while serving in the Army Reserve (formerly the Territorial Army), Navy, RAF, or Special Forces Reserves.
Why choose Irwin Mitchell to handle your military heat injury claim?
Our expert team of specialist military solicitors includes ex-servicemen, giving us an in-depth understanding of the military. We’ve helped hundreds of servicemen and women get compensation after preventable injuries, working with military consultants to identify where mistakes were made and understand the full impact on our clients’ lives and careers.
Bringing a claim against the MOD can seem daunting, but we’ve the experience and expertise to guide you through the process.
While our military injury claims team are fighting to get you the compensation you’re due, we’ll also see that you’re fully supported. Our Support and Rehabilitation Coordinators are clinical specialists, who’ll assess the medical, emotional, and/or financial help you need. We work with charities across the UK, including Widowed & Young and Day One, meaning we can find you support that’s close by.
After you’ve been awarded compensation, you’ve the option to speak to our Asset Management team of financial advisors. They can give you tailored expert advice on how to manage your compensation, making sure it’s always there for you. If you’re interested in investing your money, they can advise on this too.
We also have a team of Welfare Benefits experts, who’ll make sure you’re fully aware of any means-tested benefits you could claim because of your heat injury. To stop your compensation from affecting how much you could claim in benefits, we can set up a personal injury trust for you. This keeps your compensation separate from the rest of your finances.
Our military injury solicitors are also flexible in terms of how you want to work with us. If you want to meet with us at one of our offices to talk in a private and comfortable space, we can easily arrange this. If you can’t travel, we can arrange to meet you at home or in hospital, or set up phone or video calls.
We understand that making a claim can be stressful and emotional, and we’ll do everything possible to make you feel comfortable.
