The Winterbourne View abuse scandal in 2011 exposed the emotional and physical abuse of patients by care workers at Winterbourne View care home. The abuse was even more shocking as many of the patients had learning disabilities and challenging behaviour.
Many vulnerable people are still ending up in standard inpatient units. Often they stay there for too long, far away from their families.
In response, we’ve partnered with a number of charities that help people with learning disabilities. We’ve made a series of guides to help people and their families know their rights so they get the help they need. We’ve partnered with:
- Mencap
- The Challenging Behaviour Foundation
- Respond
- CHANGE.
These guides also address the fact that many people spend too long in inpatient settings like assessment and treatment units. The resources are funded by the Department of Health’s Strategic Partners Programme and can be downloaded below:
